breast feeding doesn’t hurt…

July 19, 2008

UH YUH it does and if I read or hear one more lactation consultant tell me that if it hurts then “I’m doing it wrong…” I may scream. Don’t get me wrong, I do love it… I love the time with him, I love his smell, his noises and his face while he’s nursing but holy crap when he latches on it is for dear life my friends. My left nip may fall off sometime today and I am only half kidding.  He is one strong child. But I’m happy to say that after 36 hours of pure engorged hell, its subsiding and leveling out to a happier more comfortable place. He’s a good little nurser, 15 minutes and he’s out for a couple of hours… but its every 90 minutes for sure. Any advice on where to get a good nursing bra that fits well and doesn’t pinch, pull, or squeeze… or itch?

Ok, I’m up. Its my time :P

He is so beautiful, sorry he was giving you a hard time with the nursing. My daughter did the same thing.

    What a beautiful boy!

Breastfeeding hurt like hell in the beginning. If the pain persists, then ask your doc about APNO (all purpose nipple ointment cream). You need a prescription for it but it saved breastfeeding for us a couple of times. I also used a nipple shield off and on for a while–it helped to let battered nips heal a bit. My baby is extremely adaptable so the shield (or a bottle, or a pacifier) never caused any “nipple confusion” for him, but I know another woman who was unable to wean her baby off the shield and is still using it at every feeding 4 months out. That would be a real pain.

And sadly, I never did find a nursing bra that fits well. I’m still schlepping around in Target specials. However, I lived in the Target nursing tanks for the first 3 months, and still wear one to bed almost every night, so I do recommend those.

Hey girl! Sorry I’ve been MIA, lots going on….congrats he is BEAUTIFUL! I am glad to hear he’s nursing well, I was a freak (in a good way) about it and love to hear when people are enjoying it. Anyway, Medela makes the best nursing bras out there, honestly and you can get it a babies r us now. If you get blisters or cracking, rub some breastmilk on your nipple, and let the air get at it. Use Medela or Lasinoh lanolin, everything else I saw has preservatives in it and you don’t want that. Make sure you are drinking plenty too, good rule – baby drinks, and mama drinks….water gets boring after a while so you can even do broth. If you are looking for advice online, Kelly mom gives great b-feeding advice. But seriously, go with the Medela bra, its the best compared to the motherhood ones.

I feel your pain. Or at least I did. The boy was what they called “a vigorous sucker” aka “a barracuda baby”. And he would feed for a 1/2 hour on each side. I had to start supplementing after a week because I was in tears and the thought of him latching on again was more than I could take. We did finally settle into it, though. As for the nursing bras, I just picked up a couple at Motherhood. They weren’t fantastic, but I knew I was only going to be nursing for a couple months until I had to go back to work.
